Languages

At Dosthill Primary Academy, it is our intent to provide all children with a high-quality education in Modern Foreign Languages. French is the language taught, and we aim to ensure that by the end of our pupils’ primary education, they are confident in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French. We believe that learning a language opens doors to future opportunities and fosters a greater understanding of the wider world.

Children have weekly lessons in French throughout Key Stage 2, using the Rigolo programme of study. Topics covered include colours, numbers, food and drink, house and home, and transport. Pupils are encouraged to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing, and interactive games. As confidence and skill develop, children record their work through pictures, captions, and sentences, reinforcing both their written and spoken understanding of French.

This approach aligns with our Discovery Curriculum, where key threads such as Openness, Curiosity, and Empathy play a crucial role. Through learning French, pupils are encouraged to embrace Diversity and Inclusion, understand different cultural perspectives, and become global citizens. These curriculum threads ensure that language learning is not just about acquiring vocabulary but about fostering the skills and mindsets that enable pupils to thrive in a multicultural world.
